SIG Building Solutions is delighted to announce that its Solar Canopy Structures project at North Devon Hospice, delivered in partnership with Eden Sustainable, has been shortlisted for the Alan Clark Award for Local/Community Energy at the Solar & Storage Live Awards 2026. The finalists were announced ahead of this year’s awards ceremony, which will take place on 22 September at the Vox, Birmingham.
The shortlisted project highlights the positive impact renewable energy can have on local communities, combining clean energy generation with meaningful financial and social benefits for a vital healthcare charity.
Working alongside principal contractor Eden Sustainable, SIG Building Solutions supplied two UK-manufactured Double Mono Solar Canopy Structures, supporting the installation of a 101kWp solar PV system across 32 parking bays at North Devon Hospice. The completed project provides sheltered parking, integrated EV charging infrastructure and generates renewable electricity on-site, helping to reduce the hospice’s reliance on grid energy.
The installation is forecast to save the hospice around £15,000 every year in energy costs, allowing more of its funding to be directed towards providing specialist care and support for patients and their families across North Devon.
The project also overcame several engineering challenges, including the site’s sloping topography. Working collaboratively, Eden Sustainable and SIG Building Solutions redesigned the original canopy concept to create a bespoke Double Mono solution that maximised solar generation while maintaining vehicle access and functionality within the operational hospice environment. Throughout the installation, careful planning ensured disruption to patients, visitors and staff was kept to an absolute minimum.
The Alan Clark Award for Local/Community Energy recognises projects that demonstrate how renewable energy can deliver lasting benefits to local people and organisations. Being shortlisted reflects the strength of the partnership between North Devon Hospice, Eden Sustainable and SIG Building Solutions, and showcases how innovative solar infrastructure can create long-term value beyond energy generation alone.
