December 9, 2025North Devon Hospice – Solar Canopy Structure Project
Eden Sustainable | SIG Building Solutions
Overview:
North Devon Hospice worked with Eden Sustainable to deliver Solar Canopy Structures that would help reduce operational costs, support sustainability goals, and enhance the hospice environment for staff, patients, and visitors.
To bring the vision to life, SIG Building Solutions supplied and manufactured two cold-rolled Solar Canopy Structures, designed specifically to integrate a high-performing solar PV system.
Key Facts:
- System Size: 170 PV modules (≈ 101 kWp)
- Canopy Layout: 2 × double-mono cold-rolled steel canopies
- Coverage: 32 parking spaces
- Structural Components: 32 individual steel components totalling 4,532 units
- Additional Features: Integrated EV charging
- Estimated Annual Savings: Up to £15,000
- Benefits: Shaded parking in summer, weather protection in winter, clean and low-cost energy generation
Project Background:
North Devon Hospice sought a sustainable energy solution that would help them manage rising energy costs while supporting their long-term environmental commitments.
Eden Sustainable proposed Solar Canopy Structures, that would generate significant on-site renewable energy while enabling the hospice to invest directly in a long-term asset that supports both financial resilience and environmental goals.
The project was made more complex by the hospice’s challenging, sloping site, which required several redesigns to ensure the canopies could be installed safely, efficiently, and without disruption to daily operations.
To ensure the design and performance requirements were met, SIG Building Solutions supplied two robust Solar Canopy Structures, engineered to house the full solar array while providing practical shelter for vehicles.

Our Solution:
SIG Building Solutions manufactured and supplied:
- Two Double Mono Solar Canopies
Each canopy was constructed using cold-rolled steel, chosen for its strength-to-weight efficiency and suitability for solar integration. Combined, the structures provide:
- Weather-resistant cover for 32 parking bays
- Optimised surfaces for the 101 kWp solar PV system
- Clean lines and a modern aesthetic fitting for a healthcare environment
High-Quality and Component Supply:
- 32 structural steel components
- 4,532 individual units supplied to meet exact specifications
- All materials designed for long service life, minimal maintenance, and compatibility with EV charging infrastructure
Benefits to North Devon Hospice:
- Significant Energy Cost Reduction
- The 101 kWp system is expected to save up to £15,000 per year, reducing the hospice’s reliance on grid electricity and supporting long-term operational savings.
Charging Infrastructure:
- Integrated EV charge points offer staff and visitors modern, future-ready facilities.
- Improved Visitor Experience
- Shaded parking during hot summer months
Covered spaces that protect vehicles from rain and winter conditions
Environmental Impact:
- The Solar Canopy Structures support the hospice’s pathway toward sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and generating local, renewable energy.
SIG Building Solutions was proud to support the project by supplying the steel structures required for their high-performing, clean-energy solution.
